A few words of thanks from Race Director Alix Cabral:
May 2, 2004
Welcome to the 2nd Annual Humane Race!
Hi, my name is Alix Cabral. Thank you all so much for being here today to support the Berkshire Humane Society.
I hope you’ve had a chance to visit with the John Perreault over at the Berkshire Humane Society
tent. He is here to tell you all about the incredible services the BHS provides to communities
throughout the Berkshires, as well as many in neighboring areas of New York, Connecticut and Vermont.
Many of
you may know that we’ve recently built a state of the art new shelter in Pittsfield.
In the old shelter, we had room for only 20 animals, now we can accommodate 75! That’s a huge
increase in the number of animals we are able to help.
But we still have a long way to go in paying for the new shelter.
People have been very generous, so far we’ve raised $2.5 million, but we still have $1.5 million to
raise in order to pay off our loans, so any additional support you can give would be greatly appreciated!
And please keep in mind, the shelter is not just about helping animals, it’s also about helping people! For example, where would the older person who can no longer care for their beloved lap dog, or the distraught family who cannot find housing that will accept their cat, or the battered woman who will only leave her abusive spouse if she finds refuge for her animals, where would these people go if it wasn’t for the safe haven that the Berkshire Humane Society provides?
Since I started volunteering at the shelter I learned a shocking statistic.
Did you know that over 5,000,000 animals a year are surrendered to shelters in the US alone?
Imagine all these animals put out on the street with nowhere to go – our neighborhoods would
look a lot different, don’t you think? So please remember that the BHS and shelters like ours
are the reason that you don’t have numbers of diseased and starving animals outside your front door, and please do what you can to help us keep it that way!
Okay, I’ve got some great prizes to give away donated by many generous local merchants,
but before it do I want take just a minute to thank our incredible sponsors. Obviously,
Mt. Greylock High School and Sweetwood Continuing Care for inviting us back for a second year,
as well as:
the Lehman Community Service Council of Williams College,
Williams College Dining Services,
the Advocate Weekly,
Greylock Animal Hospital,
West Oil,
Williamstown Physical Therapy,
Marianne McDonough Real Estate,
Williamstown Savings Bank,
Mahaiwe Tents,
Village Ambulance,
Jen Mardus, our lovely photographer,
In-Touch Massage Therapy and Day Spa,
our fantastic band, "The Coretet Offensive",
and of course, Wellness Pet Foods for sponsoring the Wellness Challenge!
Make sure you
stop by their booth for doggie treats and samples of their fabulous pet foods! We had lots of
other sponsors too, so we ask you to check them out on our website and if you have a chance,
mention to them how much you appreciate their support of the Humane Race!
Lastly, I want to thank our group of incredible volunteers.
Elizabeth Hewett and Justin Lavner, both sophomores at Williams College have planned and
executed this event with me every step of the way for which I am truly grateful.
Carl Kubler and Leo Pucklis have been our liaisons here at Mt. Greylock High School and they’ve
done a great job in the short period of time that they’ve been involved, so thank you to them!
And tremendous thanks to all of the other selfless volunteers who have helped make this day so
special, and who have made it all work so seamlessly. You cannot imagine how much I appreciate
your efforts. Finally, I would like to thank our webmaster, graphic designer and all around
support person, my husband Brian Cabral.
Okay, thank you for listening and now what do you say if I give out some prizes?
